Writing Formatted Messages

SerialMailer lets you create emails with rich formatting like different fonts, lists, tables, links, and images. To unlock these options, you first need to switch your message from Plain Text to Formatted Text mode.

Switching to Formatted Text

  1. In the Message Editor tab, look just above the main message area for a pull down menu labeled Format.

  2. Click this Format menu.

  3. Select Formatted Text from the options.

Once you select Formatted Text, a new formatting toolbar will appear directly above the message editing area. This toolbar contains buttons for most formatting tasks.

Using the Formatting Toolbar

This toolbar provides quick access to common formatting features:

  • Fonts…: Opens the standard macOS font panel to change font family, size, and style (bold, italic, etc.).

  • Text Alignment: Buttons to align selected text left, center, or right.

  • Image: Inserts an image into your message at the cursor location. (Note: This is the only way to insert images; there is no Image option in the main application menu.)

  • Link: A pop-up menu to create or remove web links on selected text.

  • Table: A pop-up menu to insert tables, add/remove rows and columns, and change table styles.

  • Font Style, Size, and Color: Select the text you want to change, then click the Fonts… button on the formatting toolbar. Use the standard font panel that appears to make your adjustments.

Working with Lists

SerialMailer supports standard bulleted and numbered lists.

  • To create a list: Select the text you want to format as a list. Go to the main application menu at the top of your screen and choose Format > List. Select the desired list style (e.g., bullet , numbered 1. 2. 3.).

  • To remove list formatting: Select the list text, go to Format > List in the main menu, and choose None.

Working with Tables

Tables help organize information clearly.

  • Insert a Table: Place your cursor where you want the table, click the Table button on the formatting toolbar, and choose Insert Table.

  • Edit Rows/Columns: Click inside the table cell where you want to make changes. Click the Table button on the formatting toolbar and choose options like Insert Row Before/After, Remove Row, Insert Column Before/After, or Remove Column.

  • Change Table Style: Click inside the table. Click the Table button on the formatting toolbar, go to the Style submenu, and select a predefined style (e.g., different borders, transparent cells).

Inserting Images

Add images directly into your email body.

  1. Place your cursor in the message where you want the image.

  2. Click the Image button on the formatting toolbar.

  3. A file selection window will open. Navigate to and select your image file.

  4. Click Open.

Editing Image Settings

  • After inserting an image, click directly on the image within the message editor.

  • A small popover window will appear next to the image. Here, you can adjust settings like image size or alignment.

Tips for Formatted Messages

  • Use the Preview tab in the main document window to see how your formatted email will likely look to recipients before sending.

  • Remember that extremely complex formatting might look different in various email clients. Simpler formatting is often more reliable.

  • If you are comfortable with HTML code, you can switch to Treat Text as HTML-Code using the Format menu above the editor for complete control.
